IEC TS 63542:2024
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) released the first edition of the flammable refrigerant monitoring system standard, IEC TS 63542:2024, on August 13, 2024. IEC TS 63542:2024 applies to refrigerant detection systems in appliances using flammable refrigerants that comply with relevant standards in the IEC 60335 series.
The relevant standards of the IEC 60335 series include:
· IEC 60335-2-40: Particular requirements for heat pumps, air conditioners and dehumidifiers
· IEC 60335-2-89: Particular requirements for commercial refrigerating equipment and ice-making machines with integrated or remote refrigerant units or motor compressors
· IEC 60335-2-104: Particular requirements for appliances for recovering and/or recycling refrigerant from air conditioning and refrigerating equipment
· IEC 60335-2-118: Special Requirements for Professional Ice Cream Machines
The testing system is primarily aimed at addressing global warming and achieving global carbon neutrality and peak carbon emissions. Countries and regions such as Europe, the United States, and Australia have introduced relevant regulations and policies banning high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. Enterprises have begun to develop and produce low
GWP flammable refrigerant products, represented by R32, R290, R600a, and R1234yf. However, the use of these flammable refrigerants increases the risk of flammability and explosiveness of products. Considering safety, when the charge of flammable refrigerants in air conditioning exceeds a certain range, IEC 60335-2-40: Annex LL takes the lead in providing testing
requirements for flammable refrigerant monitoring systems.
